"Flashback (addition to Issue 1 of the Megan story [The Maxx #31])"
by Sam Kieth
(Originally posted to the Outback mailing list, September 1998; reformatted by Chris Caughey)

weeeeell here it is:
(NOTE: THIS TAKES PLACE RIGHT BEFORE MEGAN'S "WAYS TO TORTURE YOURSELF" PAGE (the homework page) IN "The Maxx" #31)

Ext. - Megan's house - later that evening

MEGAN (VO)
Gramps always babies me and won't let me grow up. Here's an example.

Int. - Megan's living room (begin flashback)
Megan lies on couch, her head in Gramps' lap as they watch TV.

MEGAN (VO CONT)
I really wanted to ride the bus to school like everybody else, but Gramps wouldn't let me, and always dropped me off instead.
Last year, the first day of school was coming up, and I bugged Gramps endlessly to let me ride the bus with the other kids.

Int. - kitchen
Megan is seated at table while Gramps does dishes.

MEGAN (VO CONT)
But his answer was always the same thing:

GRAMPS
Naw-- the bus takes too much time away from your homework.
Besides, you're my little angel.

MEGAN
But Gramps...

GRAMPS
No.

MEGAN (VO)
I tried every trick in the book to talk him into it.
I tried for weeks, using every conceivable line of bullshit I knew.

CUT TO: LIVING ROOM
Megan stares at Gramps, arms folded, as Gramps lays on couch, turned away from her.

MEGAN
Gramps? This is a really important part of my growth and development.
You need to let go-- I'm not just a little girl any more.

GRAMPS
No.

GRAMPS
...But nice try.

Int. - Megan's bedroom
Gramps is watching Megan sleep.

MEGAN (VO)
Then, the day before school started, something must've broken-- somehow I must have reached him.

MEGAN (VO cont)
Either that, or he just got sick of my endless whining.
Either way, he came through.

Gramps stands up dramatically.

GRAMPS
Megan, I think this is a bad idea, I don't think you're old enough, but it's your decision.

CLOSER ON Megan.

MEGAN (VO)
I was so happy, I even stopped pretending to sleep.

Ext. - Megan's house
School bus pulls up in front of house.

MEGAN (VO CONT)
The big day. I got on the bus.
But I didn't know anybody, and they were all making fun of me, whispering about me.

SHOT OF Megan walking to the back of the bus, past oblivious kids.

MEGAN (VO CONT)
I went to the very last seat in the back corner and sat totally alone and humiliated through the whole ride.

SHOT OF SCHOOLBUS pulling away.

MEGAN (VO CONT)
Riding back home was even worse, because my reputation as the weird new girl was cemented that morning.

Int. - kitchen
Megan slams door once inside. Gramps eyes shift in foreground.

GRAMPS
Hi, Punkin. How was that?

CLOSER on Megan as potpourri of emotions cross her face.
She finally blurts out:

MEGAN
How could you make me do that???

SHOT OF CONFUSED GRAMPS in foreground as Megan stomps upstairs in tears.

GRAMPS
But...

Int. - Megan's bedroom
Megan is lying on bed, head buried in her arms.

MEGAN (VO)
I'd never blown up and said stuff to Gramps like that ever before.
It just wasn't something we did-- either of us. I'd broken our pact.

Beat.

MEGAN
Well, where is he? (sigh)
[or: Why isn't he coming up here?]

SHOT OF GRAMPS leaving kitchen.

Gramps walks down back porch stairs, enters basement and picks up BOX OF RECORDS.

Gramps walks up stairs to Megan's room, carrying box.

MID-SHOT of Megan's face as he plops box down in foreground.

GRAMPS
Why'n'cha gimme a hand here.
Me and Nana have a bunch of these old records, and I'd love to have some of 'em taped, in case the records break or something.
'Course I'd do it myself, but I'm pretty busy...

CLOSER on Gramps' face as he examines a RECORD.

MEGAN
What kind of records?

GRAMPS
Well, let's see here. We got a crap load of Mills Brothers, some Nat King Cole Trio-- old stuff like that.
There's three more boxes in the basement, too.
I know it's not your kind of music...

MEGAN (VO)
Oh, Gramps... why can't you tell?

MID-SHOT of Megan, sulking with her arms folded as Gramps pretends to examine a record, facing away from her.

GRAMPS
Maybe you don't need to be driven to school anymore, but maybe I still need to drive you.
(beat) You'd be helpin' me out...

MEGAN
I never really wanted to ride the bus anyway.

CLOSER on Gramps, who turns to Megan.

MEGAN
But those tapes... Well, that's a lot of work. Might come out to 60 tapes or so. I dunno...

GRAMPS
Ok, never mind.

Gramps picks up box

Megan slams it back down again.

MEGAN (nervouse grin)
OK I'll do it.

(end of flashback)

Int. - Megan's room - back to the present

PAN ACROSS Megan, with headphones on, busy mixing tapes as Gramps watches in background.

MEGAN (VO)
That was a year ago, and I've been in '40's music heaven ever since.

PULLING UP as Megan is buried in a fan-shape pile of records, mixing tapes.

EXTREME CLOSE-UP as Megan writes name and year on a cassette.

Int. - living room - evening

Megan is doing HOMEWORK as Gramps carries FOOD TRAY to Nana.

TITLE CARD: WAYS TO TORTURE YOURSELF #107

NANA (offstage)
Earl!

GRAMPS
Coming, Momma.
Megan, don't make me nag you. Get started with that homework.

Gramps exits to Nana's room.

etc....
-------

so that's it...(whew)!
the flashback was just to set up an excuse for us to show more dimension to gramps' character, plus he's supposed to actually KNOW she likes 40's music, only never lets on. she wants him to guess, but also likes feeling that he's too dumb to notice. the trick is getting the VIEWER to know gramps knows, but not letting Megan realize it. tricky huh? (well for a dope like me)

i know this doesn't work, and i'm not asking for you to do my job (well, i kinda AM, aren't i?) but just let me know if i've lost the intention of my original goal.
